About Me

My photo
For Laurie Martin-Cohn, “home” is both here in Oregon and half a world away. Her paintings capture not only the beauty of Oregon, but also take us to the romantic landscapes of her French and Mediterranean ancestry. We see dreamy clouds framing sun washed cities and terra cotta roofs above the shadowed angles of old stone buildings. The magic of her paintbrush pulls these two worlds together for us. It wasn’t always so. Laurie spent 23 years as a high school theatre instructor. Immersing herself in European art and history, something new emerged.. The subtle overtones of Laurie’s paintings tell her unique story while inviting us to explore ours. Laurie’s work has been juried into numerous shows, including those sponsored by Watercolor Society of Oregon. You can see more of Laurie’s work at Spiral Gallery in Estacada, and Three Rivers Gallery in Oregon City. To order her paintings, email lmartcohn@gmail.com.

A View from Saint-Martin, Original Watercolor 16' x 20" $250
The cross is at the burial place of one of my Boffy relatives at Église Saint-Martin de Faucogney-et-la-Mer, high above the valley of Faucogney-et-la-Mer.  Below lies the farmland that my relatives tilled before they emigrated in 1855.

Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, 12” x 16” Original Watercolor, $275

The Cinque Terre...oh that we had more than one day in that magical place!  Cinque Terre's easternmost village, Riomaggiore is the largest of the five. Overhanging coasts colorful with houses that cling to the cliffsides, bays and small beaches, terraced vineyards climbing up from the sea.  I couldn't get enough.  This is the first in my Cinque Terre series.

The Sapphired Deeps of Crater Lake, Original Watercolor, 16" x 26", $425

Crater Lake inspires awe.  Its gloriously blue waters of reflect surrounding the Cascade Mountain Range like a giant dark-blue mirror.
Native Americans witnessed its formation 7,700 years ago, when a violent eruption triggered the collapse of a tall peak. Scientists marvel at its purity: fed by rain and snow, it’s the deepest lake in the United States, and perhaps the most pristine on earth.

Trillium Lake sits alongside Mount Hood at an elevation of 3,600 feet, and is nestled in a shady, mixed conifer forest.   It provides spectacular views of majestic Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest point.

"A Glimpse of Crown Point", Original Watercolor, 16" x 20" matted, $150.
Considered one of the 7 wonders of Oregon, the Columbia River Gorge opens up around the bend near Corbett where one can see the octagonal building on the top of the cliff. This is Crown Point and the building is the Vista House.
The Vista House was built in 1916 at the same time as the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, and is the only way to reach Crown Point.  The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge. It is a museum, gift shop and interpretive display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge.
Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway: It’s easy to see why this scenic byway is known as the “King of Roads”; it’s a beautiful mix of visionary architecture, incredible scenery and rich history.

 Mont Saint Michel”Watercolor Print 16" x 12.5" $105.

It is a glorious sight: the slender spires, stout ramparts and rocky slopes of Mont St-Michel rising dramatically from the sea – or towering over sands laid bare by the receding tide. Both the abbey and the narrow alleys below transport me back to the Middle Ages.

“A Glimpse of Gordes”, Watercolor, Print 5" x 12" $105.

“A Glimpse of Gordes”, Watercolor, Print 5" x 12" $105.Gordes with its houses of white and gray stone rise up in a spiral around the rock where the village is set. Tiny streets which climb up between the tall houses.  There are beautiful old doorways, arcades and walls of flat stone perfectly restored, and on the other side, there is the panorama of the valley. At the very top is the church and the castle which face out onto the hills of the Luberon.  Due to its privileged position, its exceptional charm and its typical architecture, Gordes has been listed as "one of the most beautiful villages of France".

"The Ochres of Rousillon" Watercolor Print 12.5 x 16.5" $105.

"The Ochres of Rousillon" Watercolor Print 12.5 x 16.5" $105.Classed among the “most beautiful villages of France”, Roussillon is full of simple houses with painted in ochre from gold to sienna with all the shades of pink and red.  Ochre is everywhere, in the landscape, the building façades and also in the hearts of the people to whom the pigment provided a livelihood up to the 20th century.  I think this is my favorite villages-perchés (perched village) in all of Provence.
